One reason why Jesus was baptized in water
One reason Jesus was baptized in water, even though He had no sin to be sorry for and no sin to turn from, was because He wanted to fulfill all righteousness. What does that mean, to “fulfill all righteousness”?
In Deuteronomy 6:26, the Prophet Moses said:
“And if we are careful to obey all this law before the Lord our God, as he has commanded us, that will be our righteousness.” (NIV)
In the Old Testament, righteousness was obeying all of God’s law.
So, when Jesus said He was getting baptized in water to fulfill all righteousness, He was saying He was getting baptized to obey God’s law.
And in Jesus’ day, God’s law through John the Baptist was for people to get baptized in water, and even though Jesus had no sin to be sorry for and no sin to turn from, He was baptized in water simply because He wanted to obey God’s command for the Jews at that time.
